At this week’s Agriculture and Land Use in Ireland, Pathways to a Sustainable Future conference in Portlaoise, Shane had a poster presentation of his University College Dublin School of Agriculture and Food Science paper ‘Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Irish Pig Production; Integrated Mitigation Pathways for Sustainable Systems’
His work argues that pig production remains a crucial contributor to global food security, providing a rich source of protein and fostering rural economic development. However, as demand rises, the industry must find ways to balance increased production with environmental stewardship. Advances in genetics, nutrition, housing, and manure management can enhance efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, innovations like precision livestock farming and circular economy models show promise for creating more sustainable and resilient production systems. Ultimately, achieving economic viability, environmental protection, and social responsibility is essential for ensuring the long-term sustainability of the global pig sector.
