commitment to sustainability

At McAuliffe Pig Farms, our commitment to sustainability extends well beyond animal welfare and production standards — it includes a deep, ongoing responsibility to protect and enhance biodiversity. We recognise that farming and nature must work hand in hand, and we actively manage our land and surrounding environment to support pollinators, birdlife, and native flora.

Through the creation of hedgerow habitats, pollinator-friendly planting, and responsible nutrient management, we aim to foster a healthy ecosystem that benefits both wildlife and the wider community.

Enhancing Biodiversity Through Farming

In total we farm almost 700 acres across County Kerry and Offaly and our habitats are as diverse as upland blanket bog, ancient woodland and wetlands. Two of the farms are situated in both the Stack’s to Mullaghareirk Mountains, West Limerick Hills and Mount Eagle Special Protection Area for the Hen Harrier and the Lower River Shannon Special Area of Conservation.

Each winter, hundreds of new native trees and hedging are planted as new hedgerows and in field corners. Many wildlife ponds have been dug out, including one which led to the Hen Harrier Project including it as a supporting action for farmers across the programme. In addition to the Hen Harrier Project, the farms have taken part in the REAP, ACRES General, ACRES CP and Farming for Water projects. In 2026, we will be digging out 4 new wildlife ponds, installing a willow filter bed and using our native Kerry Bog Ponies for targeted grazing of molinia on our blanket bog.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Farmers

Shane, who leads many of our sustainability efforts, has been widely recognised for his leadership in this area. His work in promoting biodiversity and sustainable farming practices has earned him numerous accolades including being named a Farmland Biodiversity ambassador with Biodiversity Ireland. In his lecturing roles, Shane has shared his knowledge with many students who themselves have been inspired to carry out similar measures on their own farms.

His dedication to integrating biodiversity into modern pig farming serves as a blueprint for progressive agriculture, and reflects our farm’s broader vision: to be not only food producers, but responsible stewards of the land and to leave it in a better place for the generations that come after us.
